UFCW Statement on OSHA Worker Representation Ruling

April 3, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), which represents 1.2 million essential workers in grocery, meatpacking, food processing, retail, and other essential industries across North America, released the following statement in response to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) final ruling confirming that employees have the right to authorize a qualified representative, such as a union representative, to accompany OSHA compliance officers during an inspection of their workplace.

UFCW International President Marc Perrone released the following statement:

“OSHA’s finalized ruling underscores what our members have known for years: workers deserve a voice on the job, especially when it comes to their safety and workplace inspections. Allowing workers to choose their own advocate, such as a union representative with valuable expertise, balances out critical regulation that has been shifted to favor employers for far too long.

“The UFCW applauds OSHA for finalizing this ruling and reaffirming that workers have the right to choose their own qualified representation during workplace inspections.”

The UFCW International is the largest private sector union in the United States, representing 1.2 million workers and their families in grocery, meatpacking, food processing, health care, cannabis, retail, and other essential industries. UFCW members serve our communities in all 50 states, Canada and Puerto Rico. Learn more about the UFCW at ufcw.org.
