Part of building a better life means being able to take time to rest, spend time with your family, get an education for a better future, or give back to your community. Fair scheduling and paid time off are what makes that happen and is another thing we fight for on behalf of our members.
When you’re a member of a union, your contract protects you when you need leave or time off.
Having a union contract means that when you’re sick, you can stay home without penalty or that you are able to take days off for that family vacation. A contract also means more reliable schedules so that you can plan your life outside of work.
Eliminating last-minute scheduling
Too many workers are subject to “just-in-time” and “on-call” scheduling, which provide no stability and no ability to plan time away from the job. That’s why we support legislation such as the Schedules That Work Act and the Part-Time Worker Bill of Rights Act that would require employers to develop fair scheduling processes, including advance notice of any changes and, for large employers, a mandate to offer available hours to current employees before hiring new employees or subcontractors.
Protecting healthcare workers from mandatory overtime
Mandatory overtime is an unsafe and exploitative practice that forces healthcare workers to work extra hours beyond their scheduled shift, which is bad for workers and patients alike. To protect healthcare workers and patients, we encourage policymakers to pass legislation outlawing mandatory overtime in the healthcare industry, ensuring that accepting overtime is voluntary and that a worker’s refusal to accept overtime is not grounds for discrimination, dismissal, discharge, or any other employment penalty.
