Securing your future retirement

Making sure our members have the financial security they need to retire with dignity is a top priority for us. Everyone deserves a steady, reliable income once they leave the workforce. Social Security, pensions, and personal savings are the three pillars of financial security in retirement. The UFCW supports strong pensions, expanded Social Security benefits, and fair wages so working families can build retirement savings over the course of their careers.

We’re fighting to protect defined-benefit pensions, including during employer bankruptcy. These plans must remain strong through stock market dips and legislative changes that could affect our members’ savings.

Unions were instrumental in the creation of the federal Social Security program, and we continue to advocate for expanding the benefits and social safety net available to retirees. Today, union workers are far more likely to have access to pension plans than nonunion workers — 94 percent, compared to 68 percent of nonunion workers. (Congressional study, 2024)
