Grocery Workers in Minnesota Stand Together for a Better Contract

September 23, 2022

About 600 members of UFCW Local 1189 who work at five Lunds & Byerlys supermarket stores in the St. Paul, Minn., metro area recently ratified a new contract that raises wages and improves benefits.

The two-year contract includes wage increases, health and welfare contribution increases from the employer, and 401(a) contribution increases. The contract also includes improvements to scheduling, and new and improved pandemic and earned sick and safe time language. In addition, the contract includes health and safety measures to protect our members, including safety trainings and meetings, and protective equipment.

“The union committee did an incredible job sticking together to fight back against many proposed takeaways from their employer,” said UFCW Local 1189 President Jim Gleb.

“We wouldn’t have even had the opportunity to win this long and hard-fought battle for better wages and benefits without our union,” said one of the members.
