On Nov. 10, over 2,000 members of UFCW Local 400 who work at Giant and Safeway stores in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia ratified new contracts that strengthen wages and protect benefits.
The four-year contracts, which took effect retroactively on Oct. 29, 2023, and will expire on Oct. 30, 2027, includes:
- Average 24 percent pay increase over four years.
- No increases in health care costs over the next four years.
- Improved language on minimum hours for part-timers, pensions, and safety.
Voting on the new agreements took place in select stores over four days, November 6 to 9, and ballots were tabulated on Friday, Nov. 10 by members of the bargaining committee. Members at Giant Food voted 1,340 to 266 and members at Safeway voted 761 to 131 in favor of ratifying the agreements as unanimously recommended by the bargaining committee.
