Benefits Assistant

Location: Washington DC, near Metro (on-site)

Salary: The salary range is $52,278 – $57,065


Position Description

The Benefits Assistant assists the UFCW Benefits Office with clerical and administrative functions by performing the following duties:

Duties and Responsibilities

Include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.  This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented.

  • Notifies beneficiaries of benefits available due to death of participants.
  • Processes and pays death benefit claims for Pension Plan and various life insurance policies.
  • Prepares and mails new employee packages, monitors receipt of enrollment materials, and creates new employee files and uploads them to the mainframe, Unity.
  • Adds new employee information to Unity.
  • Sends refund correspondence and documentation to non-vested terminated participants. Calculates and pays pension contribution refunds. Changes service and participant codes.
  • Uploads any investment manager statements and custodial bank statements that come in the mail to SharePoint.
  • Opens, date stamps and distributes incoming mail.
  • Maintains employee confidence and protects operations by keeping data strictly confidential, including, but not limited to, the privacy provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Knowledge of routine office practice required. Experience working independently with minimal direct supervision but must be able to work with others to complete assignments and projects.

Computer/Software Skills:
Ability to organize and prepare documents requiring the integration of multiple office technology and software including word processing and spreadsheet applications. Note: Computer applications are in a DOS and Windows environment. Experience in or aptitude for working in a database systems environment.

Keyboarding Skills:
Input ability of 45 words per minute.

Communication Skills:
Ability to comprehend rules, policies and procedures, and the ability to communicate effectively with others.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated mathematical ability.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Attendance:
Attendance will be a determining consideration in all cases where two or more applicants have equal ability, qualifications and/or reliability.

Job Demands:
Ability to maintain employee confidence and protects operations by keeping data strictly confidential, including, but not limited to, the privacy provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Ability to establish and regularly maintain administrative files.

Working Conditions:
The work is performed in a normal office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Demands:
This position involves, but is not limited to, written and oral communications skills, use of computer keyboard, close vision, sitting for long periods, stooping, bending and reaching.

Compensation

Salary Range: $52,278 – $57,065.
