<p>Since 2006, UFCW 21 has been committed to building an exciting, ground-breaking, and effective Community Organizing Department that is fully integrated within the life and struggle of our union as well as our broader movement for economic, racial and social justice. Our Community Organizing Department is widely recognized for its integrity in building mutually respectful and power-building relationships with community allies of all kinds.</p>

<p><b>Responsibilities include but are not limited to:</b></p>
<ul>
<li>collaborating with diverse communities to win social and economic justice, including leadership in the <a href="http://forrespect.org/">OUR Walmart</a> campaign</li>
<li>building alliances with strategic partners</li>
<li>working with local elected officials to win just legislation</li>
<li>identifying leaders and issues</li>
<li>producing written campaign and other material</li>
<li>working independently and creatively within a plan, with the tenacity to overcome obstacles.</li>
</ul>
<p>Successful applicants must demonstrate a capacity to build and nurture a variety of relationships founded on principles of reciprocity and commitment to the longer term. Position requires willingness to work long and irregular hours, strong listening, speaking, and writing skills and a proven ability to lead. We seek candidates with some experience with unions (as a member, steward, intern or staffer) or other demonstrated commitment to economic, racial and social change. Basic computer literacy required, advanced skills a plus. Applicants must be driven to win and dedicated to the struggle for justice.</p>

<p>We are seeking a Director of the Negotiated Benefits Department.  The position is located in UFCW’s headquarters in Washington, DC and reports to the Executive Vice President and National Director of Collective Bargaining.  The Director will manage a small, professional staff and a department that is responsible for providing employee benefits expertise, negotiation and advisory services to UFCW’s local unions, Trustees and Executive Committee relating to collective bargaining and public policy issues affecting multiemployer health and pension benefit programs.  The Director represents the UFCW in collective bargaining activities; advises the EVP, Trustees and Executive Leadership on collective bargaining issues, recommendations and strategies; liaises with external employee benefit organizations and policy committees in order to keep abreast of public policy and legislative developments affecting multiemployer health and pension benefit plans; advising and preparing reports for the EVP, Executive Committee, local union leadership and others on policy developments, issues and recommendations and; participating in collectively bargained contract discussions providing negotiation leadership and support.</p>
<p>The ideal candidate must have a minimum of:   a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree in a related field is desirable); expertise in multiemployer health and pension employee benefit plans to include plan design, pricing concepts and financial aspects, understanding of health underwriting principles and ability to read and comprehend actuarial valuation reports; 10 years of experience in collective bargaining activities to include working in a multiemployer environment (e.g., union organization, professional service /consulting firm that supports union clients, trust fund office, etc.) and; understanding of the financial aspects of trust fund operations.  Substantial collective bargaining negotiating experience and skills, strong interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills with ability to build rapport with diverse audiences and communicate complex technical subject matter to non-technical audiences and, a willingness to engage in travel up to 30% are mandatory.  <span style="text-decoration: underline">Note</span>:  Corporate and/or public sector environment experience will be considered provided sufficient employee benefits (as described above) and collective bargaining negotiating experience and expertise exists.       </p>
