The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), which represents 1.2 million essential workers across North America, released a statement in response to the proposed $17 billion merger between delivery services Instacart and DoorDash.
UFCW International President Milton Jones said:
“The Instacart-DoorDash merger will be a nightmare for shoppers and workers alike. DoorDash’s history of junk fees combined with Instacart’s predatory pricing as one delivery giant spells disaster for customers. With billions of consumer data points and more power in the market, the squeeze will be on for families looking to put food on the table, especially for homebound shoppers who have virtually no other option.
“These two companies made their money by offering subminimum wages to workers, and in some cases, not even paying for work that has been done. Now, as one entity, they will have even more power over the workers who make their operations run and be able to undercut good-paying, union grocery jobs at the same time.
“The Federal Trade Commission has shown that it wants to go after predatory pricing, and there is no better case to be made than this potential merger. Both federal and state regulators must scrutinize and block this exploitative merger.”
