WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), which represents 1.2 million essential workers, released the following statement in celebration of Labor Day.
UFCW International President Milton Jones said:
“Our nation’s prosperity is inseparable from the contributions of its workers. Every Labor Day, we honor the dedication, sacrifice, and resilience of working people everywhere who keep our economies moving and our communities strong. Over the last year, workers have faced historic threats, but our members have stood together as a united front and fought back.
“When corporate mergers and industry headwinds threatened jobs, we worked to save union jobs at Four Roses Distilleries in Kentucky and at JBS in Souderton, Pennsylvania. When immigrant workers faced intimidation and uncertainty, our union was there, offering resources and support. And as artificial intelligence threatens to displace millions of good, union jobs, the UFCW testified to Congress about the impact electronic shelf labels, self-checkout, and surveillance pricing have on our members and helped pass legislation in Rhode Island and New Jersey to address these predatory technologies.
“This Labor Day, as we look toward an election where workers’ rights will be on the ballot, we celebrate the power of working people standing together and commit to electing leaders who will prioritize building an economy that works for those who make it possible.”
