Senior Communications Strategist, Campaigns – Communications Department

Location: Washington DC, near Metro (on-site)

Salary: The salary range is $78,633 – $95,570.

Position Description

The Senior Communications Strategist, Campaigns will conceive, develop, plan, and implement comprehensive and diversified strategic communications, media, and messaging strategies to support UFCW’s objectives. This position assesses communications capacity across UFCW International campaigns and affiliates and develops strategies to improve communications effectiveness. Works closely with Director and Assistant Director, Campaigns to ensure UFCW communications programs and messaging are implemented effectively in the field.

Duties and Responsibilities

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned. This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented.

  • Conceive, develop, and take lead on implementing strategic communications plans for assigned campaign with minimal supervision.
  • Conceive and prepare cohesive communications packages for specific UFCW campaigns and programs including written material, and visual content for both print and digital.
  • Ensure effective messaging strategy and brand identity is exercised across all platforms and audiences for assigned campaigns.
  • Assist and/or take lead on the coordination and on-the-ground execution of rallies, press conferences, and other events for assigned campaigns across the United States and Canada.
  • Develop functional expertise on our industries and topics related to the work our members perform.
  • Exercise expert judgment in identifying opportunities and risks in difficult messaging environments and provide crisis communications support, as assigned.
  • Develop and provide training and ongoing support for local leaders, members, and workers on effective messaging, production of media content, and various UFCW communications practices and platforms.
  • Assess new communications technologies for union-wide program potential. Recommend strategies to improve and grow communications capacity of UFCW campaigns and affiliated local unions.
  • Work with outside organizations and partners to execute joint communications and campaign goals
  • Provides communications support for UFCW conferences, International Executive Board Meetings, and other work-sponsored and related events, including, but not limited to: writing speeches and remarks, developing visual materials and presentations as directed, staffing rehearsals, and providing logistical support.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum five years communications experience in communications and/or media relations/PR for a nonprofit, political campaign, or similar organization.
  • Must have experience developing an executing comprehensive communications plan within a campaign environment.

Computer/Software Skills

  • Knowledge of word processing, graphic design software such as Canva, and mass email and text message platforms.
  • Understanding of digital communication platforms (website, text messaging, social media, email, video, etc.) and eager to adapt to the latest trends.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, including Outlook and PowerPoint, as well Google Drive, and Zoom.

Communication Skills

  • Ability to write, prepare, and edit in a creative and clear manner, under minimal supervision. Strong oral communication and presentation skills, including public speaking.
  • Exceptional interviewer skills with the ability to build rapport quickly and extract personal stories from speakers with various backgrounds and levels of communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret abstract concepts and craft narratives that articulate complex information in a compelling, reader-friendly way.
  • Must exercise discretion involving the interrelationships among the International, regional offices, local unions and members

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required

  • Ability to effectively plan and execute various moving parts of a comprehensive plan with excellent documentation, follow through, and attention to detail, often with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to organize time efficiently and work quickly and accurately on multiple long-and short-term projects as well as last minute requests.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and present potential solutions to supervisors.
  • Team player who takes direction well and is able to work in a collaborative manner.
  • Must have excellent g interpersonal n skills and the ability to coordinate between parties while respecting differing priorities and sensitivities in a respectful manner.
  • Ability to respond to and manage numerous requests from various sources in a timely and efficient manner, while accurately incorporating feedback from various principles.
  • Understanding basic graphic design and principles of effective visual communications.
  • Familiarity with principals of videography and photography with the ability to visually stage portraits, events, and photo/video shoots.

Job Demands

  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with quick turn-around both in office and at designated work locations.
  • A proactive, problem-solver with the ability to multi-task and work effectively under deadlines, ensuring assigned campaign timelines are being met with minimal supervision.
  • Work is often performed under stressful situations, with multiple projects occurring simultaneously under deadline. Irregular or unpredictable hours are required. Frequent and last-minute travel is necessary.


Working Conditions

Work involves travel, sometimes last-minute, and may involve extended stays, typically 5-10 days, at various designated work locations. Occasional irregular and/or unpredictable hours. The majority of work is performed in a normal office environment, but may be performed at various designated work locations throughout the United States or Canada. Attendance at events off-site and outside of normal working hours may be required. The noise level in a normal office environment is moderate, but may be loud in certain work locations.


Physical Demands

This position involves, but is not limited to, written and oral communications skills, use of computer keyboard, close vision, color vision, sitting for long periods, stooping, bending, lifting, and reaching.

Compensation

Salary Range: $78,633 – $95,570.
This is an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
