Tell Half Price Books: Stop Union Busting

Help us send Half Price Books the message: respect your workers!

We are the union workers at Half Price Books, and we’ve been fighting for better working conditions at our company for the past two years. As we’ve been organizing our stores and negotiating a first contract, we’ve had to deal with all kinds of union busting and unfair treatment from our company’s leadership.

We’re asking for your help speaking out against this union busting – Half Price Books needs to remember that its customers and shoppers won’t stand for any kind of anti-worker behavior at the company! Please sign our petition and demand the company STOP union busting immediately. After you add your name, we ask that you help circulate our petition to your family and friends.

If you’d like to learn a bit more about the kinds of union busting we’ve dealt with as we’ve been fighting for a fair deal, we’ve laid all of that out below. The list continues to grow as we organize at more and more stores:

How is Half Price Books Union Busting?

Stalling at the Bargaining Table:

Half Price Books’ behavior at the bargaining table over the past few years has made negotiations much slower and more challenging than they ever needed to be. The company has dragged its feet during negotiations and refused to remove problematic contract language from proposed deals, despite workers calling them out on this behavior.

Raise Withholding:

In 2023, Half Price Books gave 6% wage increases to non-union stores across the country. These raises were a direct result of our organizing efforts and proposals at the bargaining table, but the company initially refused to implement them at union stores.

While we recently secured these wage increases at 5 of our union stores, the company is STILL dragging their feet on implementing them at the rest of our union stores. AND, the company is doing this despite the fact that they claim they want to pay union and non-union stores the same. We’ve earned these pay raises, and the company’s behavior here is union busting – plain and simple.

Union Busting Behavior Across the Company

As we’ve been expanding our movement to more and more stores nationwide, Half Price Books has been spreading misinformation and trying to dissuade workers from exercising their legal rights to unionize. They’ve tried to turn new hires against our movement, in an attempt to prevent workers from making their own informed decisions about whether having a union is right for them.

We’re unionizing because we love working for Half Price Books and we want things at the company to be better. HPB is only getting in the way of themselves and progress by acting like this! We’ve already made it clear that Half Price Books is a union company, and there’s no sense in keeping up this anti-worker behavior when we only have more to gain through collaboration.

Help us make our voice heard and demand that Half Price Books STOP union busting now. Together, we can ensure the company treats us with respect as more and more HPB booksellers decide to seek union representation.
