Visual Designer

Location: Washington DC, near Metro (on-site)

Duration: Full-time position; posting closes when position is filled.

Position Description

The Visual Designer will develop and curate branded assets for the UFCW’s print, visual, and other multimedia products. An effective Visual Designer is intuitive, creative, and able to display the UFCW’s imagery in a way that emboldens all outward and internal messaging; understands the importance of the union’s brand presence; and ultimately acts as the gatekeeper for all branded materials released through the Communications Department. Visual design skills with an advanced understanding of principles of design and layout is required and experience with branding, visual identity, and logo creation is a must. Any knowledge of short-form video content and motion graphics is an added bonus. Compassion for others and a commitment to working people struggling to build a better life are a must.

Duties and Responsibilities

Designs and curates branded materials:

Creates branded assets for digital/print design projects including graphics, logos, illustrations, short-form videos, and other creative materials for the web, social, and other digital platforms. Provide digital and print graphic design support for UFCW locals’ campaigns (i.e. bargaining, organizing). This includes designing printed materials such as manuals, annual reports, booklets, newsletters, handbills, postcards, visual props, and others as needed.

Coordinates with creative vendors:

Serves as the main point of contact with print shops, mail houses, and other creative vendors. Develops job specifications for cost estimates and oversees the production process. Responsible for markups, final layouts, and proof checks to ensure quality standards are met. Manages production and delivery schedules to meet UFCW deadlines.

Supports Internal Communications Initiatives:

Designs and lays out interdepartmental communications materials such as ads, presentations, and other branded assets, as requested. Conducts graphic design trainings for UFCW departments, councils, and regional offices.

Manages Archival Items:

Oversees the organization of various physical and printed materials such as signage, publications, photos, and other audio/visual recordings. Tags and sorts digital photos using UFCW’s digital asset management software, Canto.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, fine arts, web design, visual communications, advertising, multi-media or related fields is required. Excellent visual design skills with a basic understanding of principles of design and layout, and experience with branding, visual identity, and logo creation is a must. Experience working in a retail environment is a plus. The person in this position must have two years of experience.

Demonstrated ability to conceive and execute inspiring, visually engaging digital designs and effective visual graphics, such as infographics, social media graphics, digital ads, email templates, logos, and more for the UFCW is a requirement.

Computer/Software Skills

Advanced knowledge of design principles and techniques with a fluency in professional print and web design standards and principles is required. Expert knowledge of a wide variety of multimedia software, such as Adobe Creative Suite, Office 365 Suite, Word Press, and Canva is also a requirement. Proficiency with video editing and motion graphics is a plus.

Communication Skills

For special projects, team up with developers, strategists, and others to conceptualize and design the overall framework, language, and UI for complex digital assets such as data visualizations and other immersive design products.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required

Comfort managing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with quick turnarounds. Proficient understanding of and passion for typography, composition, and color. Ability to recognize branding and identity trends. Innovative portfolio of work exhibiting high-level design skills. Must be results-oriented and highly organized, with the ability to prioritize projects and activities.

Job Demands

Experience working in a fast-paced environment with quick turnarounds. Be a problem-solver with the ability to multi-task and work effectively under deadlines. Work requires limited travel and/or occasional irregular or unpredictable hours.

Working Conditions

The work is performed in a normal office environment or may be performed at various designated work locations throughout the United States or Canada. Attendance at rallies, meetings or events off-site and outside of normal working hours may be required. The noise level in a normal office environment is moderate.

Physical Demands

The position involves, but is not limited to, written and oral communications skills, use of computer keyboard, close vision, sitting for long periods, stooping, bending and reaching.

Compensation

Salary Range: $66,931 – $84,445
