Position Description
The Assistant to the Director aids and assists the Director of the Division in carrying out responsibilities and duties while building and servicing the best interests of the UFCW and its membership.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist local unions and their members with policies, organizing and collective bargaining.
- Develops and completes all aspects of organizing programs, which includes supervising, developing and training, and directing staff.
- Develops, trains, recommends, implements, and maintains accountability systems relevant to staff on organizing programs. Prepares weekly written reports of work activities to the Director. Maintains detailed records of project activities.
- Develops contract analyses and comparisons.
- Researches and evaluates potential organizing targets.
- Handles administrative tasks related to the above.
- Maintains an understanding of field staff contracts.
- Extensive travel is required.
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
A minimum of five years’ experience in union organizing, collective bargaining and/or negotiating union contracts. Must have knowledge and understanding of the goals, policies, and practices of the UFCW, relative experience in retail, and the ability to establish, coordinate and evaluate large organizing programs. Must have successfully developed and trained staff.
Professional Skills
Must be results-oriented and highly organized, with the ability to prioritize projects and activities. Must be able to make effective and persuasive speeches or presentations to groups and individuals. Strong oral and written communication skills. Strong quantitative skills.
Computer/Software Skills
Computer literacy, including but not limited to, a working knowledge of computer functionality is required.
Personal Characteristics
Sets tone of hard work/urgency/trust/support/fairness/inclusion. Ability to interact and motivate people. Requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal effectively with elected union officers, staff, and members in difficult matters. Must be able to work on employment matters with diverse groups as well as the specific issues that affect the target populations. Demonstrated ability to not only lead but work as part of a team. Requires initiative, honesty, the ability to learn quickly, a good work ethic and the proven ability to successfully carry out assignments. Commitment to, knowledge of, and interest in the U.S. and Canadian labor movements is also required.
Leadership
Demonstrated ability in providing leadership necessary for decision-making and plan implementation. Strong communication skills and the ability to delegate and follow through. Demonstrated ability to effectively mentor and train staff as needed to achieve goals. Must be able to communicate, implement, and enforce UFCW policies and procedures with staff.
Job Demands
Ability to constantly juggle priorities, meet deadlines, and supervise personnel, while responding quickly to requests for assistance from the local union regarding any aspect of an organizing campaign, picket line activities, member servicing and contract negotiations. Must be able to engage in frequent travel throughout the U.S., on short notice, for weeks at a time. Long and sometimes irregular hours, including nights and weekends, are also necessary.
Working Conditions
When work is performed in a normal work environment, the noise level is usually moderate.
Physical Demands
The position involves, but is not limited to, written and oral communication skills, use of computer keyboard, close vision, sitting for long periods, stooping, bending, and reaching.
