Clemens Markets and Tops Purchasing Update
A&P is taking over six Pennsylvania Clemens Markets stores under the banner SuperFresh, which will be staffed with a combination of former Clemens employees and workers from other Superfresh stores. Giant Food Stores bought 13 other Clemens Markets in October to operate under its banner, keeping the Clemens store employees on staff.
UFCW Local 880 has reached an agreement with Tops and Giant Eagle regarding the sale of 18 Tops stores to Giant Eagle. According to the agreement, Giant Eagle will hire nearly all of the Tops employees in the purchased stores on terms and conditions comparable to what employees are receiving from Tops. Those stores represent 1,800 UFCW members in Ohio.
"When Giant reopens those stores, they are going to see all the same people who have taken care of them for years," said Mike Kellett, a district manager for Clemens who took over as manager of the Giant store in Conshohocken, in an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer.
