Victory at H&M More than 1,000 workers at nine Manhattan H&M clothing stores have chosen the UFCW as their voice on the job. H&M is an international company with retail clothing outlets throughout Europe and the United States.
“I think it's great that H & M workers are joining our union,” said Gil McGarvey, a member of UFCW/RWDSU Local 1102 who works at Saks Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
“More members means more power for better benefits, wages and working conditions for retail workers here in Manhattan—and in the rest of the country, too.”
RWDSU Local 1102 will be the H&M employees’ representative union at the nine Manhattan stores.
Through UFCW representation, H&M workers will have an opportunity to negotiate innovative employment standards, in addition to wage and benefit improvements, including a partnership for engaging in socially and environmentally responsible programs.
“All retail workers should have a union,” said Margie McCabe, an RWDSU/UFCW Local 1102 worker from Syms on Park Avenue. “During the holiday season you see all these news stories about shoppers and sales figures, and nobody thinks about the people who work long hours to make shopping easier. But the union is always thinking about us, and making sure that we're treated right."
"Everyone's a winner when unions work well. An open, positive company climate where no one is afraid to say what they think and feel can only be to everyone's advantage." -Helene Karlssen, UFCW member |
