Albertson's Workers Win Settlement

After four years of struggle, Albertson's workers across the country have won their right to fair pay and dignity on the job. According to a settlement of eight class action lawsuits approved by Federal Judge B. Lynn Winmill, the retail giant will have to compensate up to 150,000 current and former workers for back pay, in some cases dating all the way to 1993.

The UFCW, through its Worker Advocacy Project, supported Albertson's workers in this collective legal action against the company's apparent policy of enticing managers to squeeze unpaid work hours out of employees. The workers claimed that Albertson's "did not record and compensate employees for all time it permitted, encouraged, or required them to work; failed to permit employees to take rest breaks on the employer's time; and threatened discipline for employees who reported violations."

The long-awaited settlement requires the company to mail claim forms to the 150,000 eligible employees. Workers must submit these forms in order to be eligible to receive back pay. The UFCW also is filing suit on behalf of workers who, at Albertson's insistence, were excluded in the settlement.
