New Jersey Passes Bill Banning Mandatory Overtime for Healthcare Workers
(1/02) New Jersey unions and the New Jersey State AFL-CIO celebrated the Jan. 2 signing of the nation's strongest, most comprehensive law banning forced overtime for the state's nurses and other health care workers (in hospitals, nursing homes and other settings) except during carefully defined emergencies. Workers and their unions mobilized support for the legislation, but Republican Gov. Christie Whitman (now the head of the EPA) vetoed the bill, passed twice by the New Jersey legislature last year. Acting Gov. Donald DiFrancesco signed a new version.
