2004 Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses
The Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics has released the 2004 Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses. Among the statistics:
-
hospitals and nursing homes continue to lead the 14 industries that account for half of all reported injuries and illnesses
-
the number of injuries that require a worker to recuperate, either time at home or on a different job, is virtually the same as 2003: over 2 million injuries and illnesses
-
manufacturing, which includes meatpacking, poultry and food processing, accounts for 1-i- 5 injuries and illnesses, but is only 14% of employment and is significantly higher than overall private industry and remains virtually the same as 2003
-
food manufacturing is among three manufacturing industries that accounted for 42% of the cases, but only a third of the employment
-
the number of injuries and illnesses reported for retail trade is significantly higher than reported for private industry
