Canadian National Day of Action Protests Jonquiére Closing
Wal-Mart chose to destroy the livelihoods of 200 workers by closing its store in Jonquiére, Quebec, rather than reach a fair wage and benefit settlement with members of UFCW Local 503. The company has now followed through and shuttered the store. It appears the company was hoping the action would intimidate other workers from engaging in organizing efforts. But Wal-Mart workers, supported by the people of Canada, aren’t buying that. Instead, they launched a National Day of Action in dozens of Canadian cities to protest Wal-Mart’s irresponsible behavior, boosting worker efforts to organize with UFCW Canada in stores across the country.
In Jonquiére, hundreds gathered to show the true face of Wal-Mart by forming
a giant human mosaic transforming Wal-Mart's logo from a smile to a sneer.
The Jonquiére rally was one of many involving thousands of activists on May 6th at Wal-Mart locations across Canada—one week after the company closed its Jonquiére store.
