ICE Scam

The federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) jeaporidized the safety of immigrant workers when its officers masqueraded as safety instructors to round up documented and undocumented workers in North Carolina in July.  The officers posted flyers advertising a mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) meeting, and then arrested nearly 50 workers who attended.

The scam meant to entrap immigrant workers undermines the integrity of OSHA in its efforts to reduce worker injuries and deaths.  The government should not betray OSHA's mission to promote worker safety with immigrant workers, as these workers suffer the highest rates of on-the-job injuries and deaths.  Immigrant workers are often reluctant to learn about OSHA standards for fear of being harassed, fired, or even deported.  As a result of ICE's scam, OSHA's credibility with immigrant workers will diminish OSHA’s ability to do the critical work of protecting America’s labor force.
