The Union Difference at ShopRite

Wakefern is the company that owns and/or supplies ShopRite and PriceRite. But here’s the difference: the vast majority of ShopRite workers have a union at their store, while PriceRite workers do not. And Wakefern won't ensure that PriceRite workers have the same opportunity to join the union that ShopRite workers do--without company interference.

A union contract gives ShopRite workers job protection and security, because ShopRite has to stick to the contract. They can’t just change wages and benefits, or make up new rules or regulations that employees have no say about.

But at PriceRite, because there is no union contract, PriceRite management is free to change anything about an employee’s job, at any time. There is no protection for workers—they have no voice on the job. In fact, workers at PriceRite are called "at will" employees by their company. Here's an excerpt from their Employee Handbook:

"...the Company has the right to terminate any employee's employment at any time, with or without cause."

ShopRite workers, however, under their union contract, can't be disciplined without just cause and have the right to representation to address any unfair discipline.
