Our Low-Wage Economy Is Destroying the American Dream

The 2008 election presents UFCW members and all working Americans with an opportunity to elect a leader who will address the growing divide in the American workforce between low-wage and high-wage workers and support legislation to strengthen workers’ rights—including the right to join a union.

Workers in low-wage jobs often face grueling and dangerous working conditions for little pay and, in many cases, few or no benefits like child care, health care, pensions, or vacation. So why are companies allowed to continue exploiting the labor of hard-working Americans?

Over the last 20 years, a number of myths have arisen to justify a low-wage economy.

MYTH

 FACT

Training and new skills will solve the problem.
American employers must keep wages and benefits low if they are to compete in the global marketplace.
Low-wage jobs are the result of our free-market system—there’s nothing we can do to change that.
