America’s Working Families Struggle with Rising Cost of College Tuition

The increasing cost of college tuition is pricing America’s middle class out of higher education. In the past 25 years, the average cost of tuition and fees has risen faster than personal income, consumer prices and even health insurance. Between 2000 and 2005, the average cost of tuition for students attending a four-year public university rose by 40 percent.

While the cost of a college education is rising faster than family income, key federal tuition assistance programs such as the Pell Grant program have failed to keep pace with the rising cost of college.  The maximum Pell Grant covered 51 percent of the cost of tuition, fees, room and board at a public four-year college during the 1986-1987 school year, and covered only 35 percent of those costs in 2004-2005. (The College Board; U.S. Department of Education)

The 2008 election presents UFCW members and American workers with an opportunity to elect a leader who will expand Pell Grants, cut student loan costs and make payments more manageable.
