Giving Our Members Control Over Their Lives

“On-call” and last minute scheduling is the reality millions of workers cope with every day. It’s become common practice at many retail stores—making daily tasks such as arranging child care or furthering education difficult to complete — and it’s something we believe must change.

“Buying a wedding dress or a child’s first pair of shoes, these are big events and we work hard to make them special memories for customers,” said Sherry Hamilton, who works at Macy’s. “I don’t think people realize how much havoc bad scheduling can have upon a worker’s life. By making work schedules in the retail industry more stable and reliable, we would be able to enjoy precious moments in our personal lives as well.”

For UFCW members, like Sherry Hamilton, having more control over their lives is something that can’t be measured. Providing stable schedules is just a part of our mission of fighting to create the better lives our members – and all workers – have earned and deserve.

Building a New Industry

We’re proud to represent thousands of medical cannabis workers in six states and the District of Columbia. UFCW members in the cannabis industry work predominantly in dispensaries, coffee shops, bakeries, patient identification centers, hydroponics stores, and growing and training facilities. We have been a key leader in coalitions and advocacy groups that work for real change at all levels of policy and have been instrumental in working to advocate for the good jobs provided by the medical cannabis industry.

We’ve also been a leader in helping craft and support targeted legislative efforts with industry coalitions that are setting new standards for cannabis workers as they negotiate for better wages and benefits. Working together, the UFCW, dispensary workers and owners, along with patients and coalition allies, are not only helping to grow a new industry responsibly, but also to create good new jobs that can support workers and their families.

Putting Workplace Safety First

Up until 1989, repetitive stress injuries were a major issue for countless of workers in meat packing plants, and issues like ergonomics were seldom talked about. Distressed by the high injury rate in the plants, the UFCW partnered with Tyson, one of the leading meat processing companies, to pioneer a groundbreaking program that within the first two years of its implementation resulted in a 73% drop in reported injuries and illnesses requiring a doctor and a 67% drop in injuries and illnesses reported overall. This safety program, which continues today, raised the bar for safety standards industry-wide, and proved that safety must come first. It’s what our members – and all workers – have earned and deserve.

“What this program shows is that when workers have input on working conditions, when they are part of the decision-making process, you come up with a better, safer environment—and that’s good for everybody,” said UFCW Food Processing, Packing and Manufacturing Division Director Mark Lauritsen.

“The real key to the success of this program has been the workers who serve as safety and ergonomics monitors,” said Jim Lochner, chief operating officer of Tyson Foods. “ The input we’ve received from hourly production workers and the participation of our plant and corporate management teams, have been invaluable.”
