Lakeside-Funeral

BROOKS, Alberta -- About 200 people paid their last respects to two striking Douglas O'Halloran, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers, addressed the mourners attending the men's funeral yesterday in Brooks.

He says the union is making up buttons with the men's pictures on them for all strikers to wear in their memory.

The two men (29-year-old Tewodros Fatene and 32-year-old Eyasu Wolde Yohans) died instantly near the plant last Thursday when the car they were in crashed into another car, which was also filled with striking workers.

Mourners heard that one of the victims was about to get married and the other had only been married for three months.

Both men were from Ethiopia and their bodies will be flown back there today.

Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers have been on strike at Lakeside Packers for two weeks in an effort to get a first contract.
