Fortune Reporter Says Wal-Mart Takes PR Approach Instead of Addressing Employment Practice Problems

“I’d argue that every company needs to strike a kind of a balance.  If you are driving your costs down at the expense of your own employees, or your suppliers, or laborers in China or Indonesia who are working in substandard conditions, you’re out of balance.”

On today’s broadcast of National Public Radio (NPR), Fortune Magazine senior writer Marc Gunther says Wal-Mart is the counterexample to the trend of American business becoming more responsible.  He also points out that Wal-Mart is more concerned with its public relations image rather than dealing with the company’s fundamental problems.

“I think Wal-Mart is trying for a PR solution to a substantive problem at the moment," Gunther said.  "And I think they’re going to have to come up with substantive and real solutions to fend off the negatives that they’re dealing with now."
