Wal-Mart Faces Challenge From Rapidly Expanding National Coalition (Washington, DC): Wal-Mart, as the country's largest corporation, retailer and employer, is where America shops and works. The local Wal-Mart is a fixture of the community and is increasingly becoming the new American Town Square. Is America's store living up to America's values? Wal-Mart workers, shoppers, and neighbors will demand that the retail giant provide for America, good jobs with living wages and affordable health benefits, safe stores for workers and consumers, fair business practices, equal treatment for all workers and consumers. Wal-Mart must end the trade in goods from countries with child, forced, or slave labor and respect the rights of workers, consumers, and citizens to have their voices heard. The catalyst for this change is the People's Campaign-Justice@Wal-Mart and the more than 100 public protests and events that will be held in nearly every state in the country on Thursday, November 21, 2002. The People's Campaign-Justice@Wal-Mart has been endorsed by leading women's, civil rights, student, consumer and worker organizations. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union will be joined by the AFL-CIO, National Organization for Women, National Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice, National Baptist Convention-USA, Inc., and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Who: A former Wal-Mart worker, a Wal-Mart customer and a Wal-Mart neighbor, AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, UFCW President Doug Dority, NOW President Kim Gandy, NICWJ Board Member Mark Harrison, National Baptist Convention-USA, Inc. leader Dr. Bennie Mitchell and other supporting organizations.
