Charles Krug Winery Workers Approve New Three Year Pact
Eight Month Lockout Ends

Charles Krug production workers, members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) Local 186D in Napa, California recently approved a new three year agreement. The new contract ends a bitter struggle for decent wages and job security. The company locked out the workers on July 3, 2001, when workers refused to accept the company's regressive proposal that included huge wage cuts, use of non-union workers, and substantial increases in employee co-pays for health insurance.

Many community activists and other union helped support the Krug workers throughout their eight month struggle for fairness. The new contract was reached through federal mediation that helped modify the company's offer. The new contract provides:

  • health insurance coverage;
  • a balanced wage classification system;
  • more opportunities for promotions and advancement; and
  • job security.
UFCW Local 186D and its members survived this attack by management through determination and unity. The UFCW is committed to enhancing representation for workers in the wine industry and reaching out to unorganized workers to help them get a voice on the job.

By ratification, the boycott of Charles Krug Wines and C. K. Mondavi Wines has ended.
