Chemical Workers Council Names Larry Gregoire New President

The International Chemical Workers Union Council Executive Board of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union elected Secretary-Treasurer Larry V. Gregoire President of the ICWUC on August 20, 2001, following the retirement of Frank D. Martino. The Board also approved the appointments of Frank Cyphers, Vice President and Regional Director in Region 3, to the vacated position of Secretary-Treasurer and Martin Perry to Vice President/Regional Director of Region 6, President Gregoire's former position. All of the officers must stand for election at the Fall 2002 Council Convention.

President Gregoire is no stranger to the ICWUC's local unions, having been Secretary-Treasurer of the Council since February 1999. In 1970 he joined the Chemical Workers at Local 588 in Baton Rouge, La. As President of Local 588, he took the lead on health and safety issues. His efforts at a Foster Grant manufacturing plant in Baton Rouge stopped the company from using benzene, a carcinogen, as a cleaning agent.

Gregoire was appointed International Representative in 1985. In 1989 he became Vice President and Regional Director of Region 6, which includes the states of Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Tennessee. At the first Council convention after its merger in 1996 with the United Food and Commercial Workers, he chaired the Bylaws and Resolutions Committee and was elected to the combined position of Secretary-Treasurer/Regional Director. He has been performing the duties of the President since July 1, 2001.
