Furrs Workers Demand Respect for Community Living Standards and Secure Union Jobs
Workers Rally at Auction of Furrs Supermarkets

Furrs workers are standing up for good jobs with decent benefits in their community. After years of outstanding service to the greater New Mexico community, the thousands of loyal Furrs employees will not let a new owner throw their years of hard work down the drain.

Community leaders and sister union supporters joined members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) Local 1564 at a rally today to demand that whatever company purchases the Furrs' stores respects community living standards and honors their union wages and benefits.

"Furrs workers are out here today to send a clear message to whatever company buys these stores: we want the workers and their benefits protected. This community and these workers will not stand for a new company that comes in to lower standards or reduce benefits," said Diane Kimberle, UFCW Local 1564 President.

More than 3,500 Furrs workers across the state and in El Paso, Texas have been building community support and joining together by wearing matching buttons in the stores that read: "Workers-UFCW-Community: United We Win!"

UFCW Local 1564 and Local 540 members are reminding the prospective buyers that the employees are the company's most valuable asset, and their jobs, workplace standards and benefits should be honored.

The UFCW contract that protects the 3,500 Furrs workers benefits the community by maintaining high standards and providing excellent health care benefits to employees.

"Our community values good jobs with good benefits. If the workers aren't respected, we are prepared to ask the community not to shop at your stores," said Kimberle.
