Detroit Area Supermarket Workers: Contract Negotiations 2001
Kroger Company and Union Reach Tentative Agreement

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 876 officers and committees met with Kroger officials and after intense bargaining through the March 4 midnight-deadline and into today, the UFCW Local 876 reached a tentative agreement and successfully completed negotiations with the Kroger Company.

Local 876 was prepared to strike for a fair and just contract after the membership voted overwhelmingly and approved to authorize a strike with a 96 percent vote.

"Our membership stood up for what they deserved. Their strength and commitment to stand together is the reason we are able to reach this important agreement with the Kroger Company," said UFCW 876 President Andy Johnson.

Details about the Kroger package will not be available. The Kroger members will vote on this package shortly. UFCW 876 is confident that this package provides and protects living wages and affordable health care benefits for its members and for the future of its workers.

UFCW 876 plans to move right into Farmer Jack negotiations. UFCW 876 will propose a similar package to Farmer Jack and demand acceptance from the company. No specifics have been announced.

There is a 24 hour hotline to call for all updates regarding the negotiations - 1-800-321-6406, ext. 5900.
