CAGLE-KEYSTONE POULTRY WORKERS TARGET McDONALD'S CUSTOMERS Cagle-Keystone poultry workers from Albany, Kentucky, are standing strong for their rights on the job. After a nearly yearlong campaign for a voice on the job and a safer workplace, workers are taking their message directly to McDonald's customers. The workers will launch a public education campaign on Friday, May 25, 2000 that asks McDonald's customers, "How much do you know about the workers who produced your McDonald's chicken?" Workers at the Albany facility prepare a range of poultry products including breaded chicken for McDonald's. Customers will read literature asking them to demand that McDonald's request its suppliers to adhere to a Code of Conduct that would provide poultry workers with a living wage, safer working conditions, stronger food safety provisions and the right to organize a union in the workplace. Kentucky and federal taxpayers are contributing more than $50 million to Cagle- Keystone's Albany poultry facility, while the company is denying the 1,000 plant workers their right to organize for safer working conditions and a living wage. The UFCW is the largest poultry worker organization in the country, with 1.4 million members--60,000 of them in the poultry industry. |
