Education
The rising cost of a college education is squeezing millions of students and their families. As the cost of college outstrips middle class Americans' ability to pay, too many students are forced to take on high loan debt burdens and work long hours that interfere with their academic study. Access to an affordable education should be the right of every college-qualified student.
UFCW recognizes the importance of an affordable higher education both to our young workers and the children of UFCW members. Together, we can make policy makers understand the importance of affordable higher education to working families.
UFCW has supported legislation that will increase student grant aid and lower the burden of student debt. Make sure your elected officials hear from you on issues that matter most, like the cost of education. Sign up to be a Volunteer In Politics at http://www.ufcw.org/issues/recruit_vips/index.cfm

Recent Legislation UFCW has supported:
H.R. 5, the College Student Relief Act of 2007 (http://www.house.gov/apps/list/speech/edlabor_dem/rel071107.html) will make college more affordable and accessible by cutting the interest rates on subsidized student loans in half -- from the current 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent.
HR 2669, the “College Cost Reduction Act of 2007 (http://edworkforce.house.gov/micro/sl_reliefact.shtml) provides significant increases to Pell grants, links loan repayment to income for all borrowers, lowers interest rates for low and middle-income borrowers and increases the income protection allowance for all students removing disincentives to work while in school.
