U.S. Census figures show the average earnings of both men and women on a steady and rapid decline beginning in 2000, but the overall earnings for men has fallen significantly more than the wages for women which, according to the Economic Policy Institute, is the only reason for the decrease in the gender gap. Many are claiming that this is a step forward for working people and are projecting a further decrease in the gap in the future. According to U.S. Census figures, if current trends continue, the gender gap will disappear by 2024 with full-time workers earning just under $25,000 a year. These figures show that by 2024, men will be earning 40% less than they do now and women will be earning 22% less.
