Bush’s Privatization Plan Continues to Lose Support

March 1, 2005

Public approval of President Bush’s plan for privatizing Social Security is continuing to decline, according to a USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll conducted over the weekend.  Only about 35 percent agree with the way Bush is handling Social Security, down from three weeks ago when 43 percent of Americans approved.

The poll showed much higher public approval of AARP, the 35-million member retiree organization leading the fight to strengthen Social Security rather than destroy it with private accounts.  AARP’s favorable rating was 75%, compared with 56% for Bush.
