Poll Continues to Demonstrate Public Opposes Bush on Social Security

March 15, 2005

A Washington Post/ABC News poll reiterates the fading support of President Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security, echoing similar poll results taken by USA Today/CNN/Gallup and New York Times/CBS News weeks ago.

In the Washington Post poll, only 35 percent of over 1,000 people surveyed said they approved of the way Bush is dealing with Social Security.  Almost 60% said the more they learn about Bush’s plan to privatize the system, the more they oppose it.

A USA Today poll released February 28 showed that 35% of the public approve Bush’s handling on Social Security, down from 43% just three weeks prior.  A New York Times poll released March 2 revealed the majority of Americans call Bush’s privatization plan a bad idea.  Opposition to his plan significantly increased when people were told it could mean a cut in their guaranteed retirement benefits.
