Poll Shows More Young Adults Agree with Older Americans in Opposing Private Accounts

April 1, 2005

 Dont Privatize SS
A new poll shows that young adults are becoming increasingly against President Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security.  Nationwide polling of 18 - 29 year olds by the Pew Research Center found that support for private accounts significantly dropped from 66 percent in February to 49 percent in March.

“What’s happening in general is the more people hear about this the less they like it, and young people are catching up with that,” said Carroll Doherty, editor of the Pew poll.

The youngest generation thought to most likely support private accounts is instead moving closer to their grandparents’ generation of opposing it.

A recent AARP survey of adults 50 years and older shows that almost 60 percent are against privatization.  In addition, 60 percent said they would be less likely to vote for a candidate from their district who supports legislation creating private accounts.
