ABC News/Washington Post Poll Shows Increased Opposition to Bush's Handling of Social Security
May 2, 2005
The newest ABC News/Washington Post poll released April 25 reiterates increasing opposition to Bush's handling of Social Security, with 64 percent disapproving and 31 percent approving. The poll results come in the middle of the President's 60-day campaign tour to promote his plan to privatize Social Security.
Just as Bush is trying to sell the prospect of establishing private accounts, the ABC/Post poll shows that the majority opposes having a stock-market option. Also, 70 percent of people polled said they oppose establishing private accounts if it means cutting the rate of growth in guaranteed benefits for future retirees.
A previous ABC/Post poll taken in March showed 35 percent of people surveyed said they approved of the way Bush is dealing with Social Security. In that poll, 60 percent said the more they learn about Bush's plan to privatize the system, the more they oppose it.
