Immigration Reform

If you are concerned about the civil rights of immigrants, you may want to use this letter as a guide to write to your Political Representatives.

The Honorable [Full Name of Senator/Representative]
United States [Senate/House of Representatives]
Washington, DC [20510/20515]

Dear [Name of Senator/Representative]:

I am writing to let you know about my views on immigration reform.

I know that any immigration reform effort that is fair will include a process for
an adjustment of status, or legalization, for undocumented workers who are law- abiding contributors to the American economy and to our society.  These workers deserve the same rights and should bear the same responsibilities as other immigrants.  Any such program should also provide the opportunity for these immigrants to unify their families.

But any attempt to expand or create new guestworker programs at this time would be wrong. These abusive guestworker programs are nothing more than indentured servitude.  Legally and practically, guestworkers have never been afforded the workplace protections or civil rights they deserve and they have been denied democratic rights and economic bargaining power.  Their vulnerability makes the rest of us vulnerable.

Fixing the immigration laws will not be simple, but without legalization no prospective solution works.  By creating more abusive guestworker programs, we only succeed in making the situation worse.

As your constituent, I'd like to hear your views about this important issue.

Sincerely,
