To celebrate this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month, each Friday we will feature a Latino who has made a difference in the lives of working Americans.

On August 8, 2009, Latinos in America had something to celebrate. For the first time in history a Latina took the judicial oath and was sworn in as a Supreme Court Justice.  Sonia Sotomayor, a Bronx native of Puerto Rican descent, became the first Hispanic to become an Associate Justice and only the third woman to hold this position.

U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis

Hilda Solis and Joe HansenHilda Solis was born in Los Angeles, California as the daughter of immigrant parents. She comes from a family with strong labor roots. Her father, originally from Mexico, was a Teamster shop steward who fought for better benefits and wages for all workers. Her mother, who was born in Nicaragua, was a member of the United Rubber Workers.

Q&A with Johnny Rodriguez, President, United Latinos  

Johnny RodriguezAs the president of United Latinos, UFCW International Vice President and President of UFCW Local 540 in Dallas, Texas Johnny Rodriguez has a long history of fighting for working Latinos. He has championed many issues of importance for the Hispanic community in Texas and nationwide. Under his leadership, United Latinos has helped Latinos fight for better wages, benefits and respect at work.

Rodriguez shared his thoughts about United Latinos, the challenges faced by Latinos in the workplace, and how unions benefit Latino workers.
