I began my retail career in 1993 with Jewel-Osco; Jewel to start and then Osco. I didn't realize just how lucky I was to be a union member until 1996 when I was offered a retail job for a nonunion company. I was lured away by the promise of more money. The hourly rate was better, and during the grand opening weeks the extra money was great. But soon my hours dropped dramatically, and there was nothing I could do about it.
It occurred to me that the guaranteed hours and health insurance provided under my Osco contract were extremely important benefits. I began to calculate the value of my union membership. Five weeks later, I returned to Osco having learned an important lesson about job security and benefits. Guaranteed hours, a true voice on the job, a retirement plan, and very affordable health insurance for my son and me are just a few of the reasons I am thankful to carry a Local 881 membership card in my purse!
