Kent Thacker
Former Wal-Mart Employee
Noblesville, IN
Kent Thacker was a lot like most UFCW members when he worked at Wal-Mart. He worked hard at his job and cared about his family, his marriage and his 6-year-old daughter.
But Kent was different. While working for little over a year at a Supercenter in Noblesville, IN Kent didn't get to enjoy the benefits of working under a union contract. He didn't have a voice in the workplace or know when he would get his next raise or how much it would be. He didn't know how much more money he would have to pay out of his check for health insurance.
Kent liked his job in the hot food area in the back of the store and enjoyed his coworkers. But Kent was frustrated. It was difficult to pay the bills when over $100.00 was deducted from his paycheck every two weeks for insurance. That is over $200.00 per month or $2400.00 per year that he pays just for health insurance. The insurance was a priority because Kent's wife has a medical condition which requires regular doctor visits, and no one with a 6-year-old daughter wants to be without insurance.
Kent really understands what a value Local 700 members get for the union dues that they pay. Without a union contract he and other Wal-mart workers were at the mercy of their employer for any decision that involves their wages, benefits, and working conditions.
