Right to work laws vs real job security

Why “right to work” is bad.

The UFCW is fighting for fair treatment at work.

You deserve fair treatment at work – and that means the protection of a union contract. Most people don’t know that without a union contract they can be fired for almost any reason or no reason at all. Having a union means you always have someone that has your back if you feel you are being unfairly disciplined or targeted.

A strong union with real resources is the only way to ensure you’re treated fairly at work. However, more and more states are adopting so-called “right to work” laws that work to damage your union’s resources and ability to protect you on the job. Studies have shown there’s no real economic benefit to these laws — for workers or for companies — and worker wages are, on average, lower than in states without right to work laws.

“At 9 months pregnant, I was on the picket line to make sure my employer provided our patients with safe staffing levels they deserve, to get the care they needed. The UFCW means that you don’t have to choose between fighting for what’s right, and providing for the ones you love.”

We continue to fight against efforts at both the state and national level to enact these laws that, in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., have a real purpose of working “to destroy labor unions and the freedom of collective bargaining by which unions have improved wages and working conditions of everyone.”
