Packinghouses
More then 100,000 of us work in meatpacking and meat processing plants across the great plains and in the South. We come from cities and farms across the U.S. and Canada, and from distant places around the world. We slaughter beef, pork, and lamb stock, and cut-up and trim the meat for shipping to supermarkets, hotels and restaurants, and for export to countries worldwide. We also smoke meat and make products like hot dogs, hams, bacon and sausage. We do some of the toughest and, unfortunately, some of the most dangerous jobs around. But through union representation, we have begun making our jobs safer. We have also gained rights at work, like supervisors who treat us with respect for our hard work and who speak our many native languages.
