Occupational Safety and Health Office
Occupational Safety and Health Office
The Occupational Safety and Health Office develops programs and materials to improve safety on the job for workers in a wide range of occupations—from meatpacking and food processing plants to grocery stores, nursing homes and garment and textile factories.
The office was a key player in the fight for a U.S. ergonomics standard that was repealed by the Bush Administration shortly after the standard became effective in 2001. Since its repeal, millions of workers have suffered needless injuries on the job, some of them crippling, career-ending injuries. The office is continuing the fight for a strong ergonomics standard to prevent needless workplace repetitive strain injuries.
The office has received numerous U.S. Labor Department grants that fund outreach programs on ergonomic hazards and training for members in the meatpacking, poultry and food processing industries; educational programs and materials on preventing lifting injuries among UFCW nursing home members; and training programs and materials on preventing workplace violence for retail workers. Staff also conduct dozens of hazard identification and training programs for UFCW members and leaders each year.
