Legal Department
The UFCW Legal Department provides assistance to local unions and the International Union on a broad range of issues and cases. The department’s main concern is securing the protections that employees are entitled to under law, while working to find new ways to advance the interests of UFCW members and all working people.
The work of department attorneys extends to all areas of the UFCW, including organizing campaigns, strikes, picketing, affiliations, collective bargaining, and political and legislative activities. The attorneys advise International officers and staff, and craft innovative legal strategies to advance the UFCW’s goals. The Legal Department also provides direct assistance, when needed, to UFCW local unions in cases before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the courts, and other federal and state agencies.
Victories in the courts win workers dignity on the job, whether it is forcing employers to pay workers for all time worked or recognize employees’ right to union representation. The Legal Department constantly seeks every opportunity in the court of law and before the NLRB to secure justice for all working people.
