Distillery, Wine and Allied Workers Division
As with all manufacturing sectors, the wine and spirits industry is undergoing rapid economic transformations and shifting consumer demands, while a changing demographic landscape is altering the industry’s workforce. The UFCW Distillery, Wine and Allied Workers Division is meeting the challenge of these changes with innovation, staying ahead of industry trends to ensure that UFCW members who make the wine and spirits we drink have strong union contracts that protect jobs and provide a decent living.
In California, where winery production has experienced significant increases over the last decade, the division utilizes a broadly based organizing program to bring UFCW representation to new workers in the industry. This program is expanding to connect with winery workers in Washington state, which has also seen a dramatic increase in wine production. In addition, the division is intensifying organizing efforts in the spirits sector, targeting commissioned sales and merchandising workers.
Of critical importance to the division is the legislative front. As a significant source of tax revenue for states and the federal government, wine and spirits production and sales are highly regulated. The division, in coordination with the UFCW Legislative and Political Action Department, engages in sustained political activity to ensure that new wine and spirit regulation does not threaten industry jobs.
