Civil Rights and Community Action Department
Civil Rights and Community Action Department
The Civil Rights and Community Action Department is dedicated to advancing the principles and practices of equality, freedom, and economic and social justice.
For well over 100 years, the UFCW has worked hand-in-hand with community, religious, and progressive groups to help workers exercise their rights on the job and make their voices heard in the political realm. The Civil Rights and Community Action Department acts as the UFCW bridge between a variety of African-American, Asian, Latino, women’s, and civil rights groups who stand with working men and women seeking to make their lives better through union representation.
The Civil Rights and Community Action Department supports community service projects such as food and clothes distribution to families in need. The department also promotes the active participation of members in community service projects through the Volunteers in Progress (VIP) Club, which provides local unions with community contacts, as well as tips for working with community organizations. In addition, VIP members help inform non-union workers about UFCW membership and ways to get a voice on the job.
Right now, the face of the American workforce is changing. Immigrant workers are coming from all parts of the world and are now making up a significant percentage of the workforce in UFCW-represented industries. The Civil Rights and Community Action department is at the forefront of UFCW’s efforts to increase union density in those industries by bringing the strength of our diversity to our organizing efforts.
