Joint Effort [Local 881, Jewel Stores]
Raises $53,000 for Leukemia Research

Local 881 and Jewel Stores raised $53,000 in "Hand in Hand for Leukemia," a joint fundraising effort that took place September 11 and 12. All of the money collected for the event will go toward the research activities of the Leukemia Society of America. Local 881 President Ron Powell stated, "I can't tell you how proud of I am of every one of them [the union members], although I'm certainly not surprised. This is what I've come to expect from Local 881 members."

Jewel employees who are members of Local 881 worked very hard to ensure the success of the event, which took place at participating Jewel Stores in the Chicago metropolitan area and northwest Indiana. Volunteers put in many hours collecting donations from customers outside Jewel stores. This is the first year that Jewel Stores has participated in the union's many years of fundraising campaigns for the Leukemia Society; it also happened to be the 100th Anniversary for Jewel Stores. As Powell added, "It just made sense to work together for such a good cause. And it obviously paid off!"
