The city of Gordon, Neb., is looking for a taker for the former Agriprocessors slaughterhouse facility located in their town, according to a report in The Associated Press.
The city bought the plant, in conjunction with First Bank Business Capital Inc., last week during an Agriprocessors bankrupty auction.
The plant closed as Agriprocessors went into bankruptcy in November, 2008. The company’s main Postville, Iowa, facility was bought and now is being operated as Agri Star; that deal did not include the Gordon plant. Agriprocessors’ bankruptcy suit earlier this month was converted to a Chapter 7 liquidation case, and the company soon will cease to exist.
The city manager, Fred Hlava, told the AP that he has spoken with various parties about the facility. Some, he said, are interesting in re-starting a kosher operation there; others are interesting in more conventional processing operations.
Hlava says the city of Gordon has a lien on the land because Agriprocessors didn’t meet terms of a state economic development grant. The bank has a lien on the remaining equipment.
